The Bridges of Eagle County
A Story of Pioneers, Politics, and Progress
by Kathy Heicher
From the first rickety structures that miners and homesteaders built in the 1880s to the magnificent steel arch constructed at Red Cliff in 1940, bridges are a historic record of the evolution of Eagle County. Transportation was the key to prosperity, and innovative Eagle County leaders were eager to prove their commitment to progress. Each bridge has its own story. Written by award-winning journalist and historian Kathy Heicher.
The Eagle County Historical Society is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to educate Eagle County residents and visitors about Eagle County’s rich history. To that end, the society will maintain archives that are available to the public, operate a historical museum, and offer educational programs and special events related to the county’s history.
